How About A New Year Resolution?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

But First A Little Background Information.<\/h4>\n

The ancient Babylonians<\/a><\/span><\/span>\u00a0are said to have been the first people to make\u00a0New Year\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>resolutions, some 4,000 years ago. They were also the first to hold recorded celebrations in honour of the new year \u2014 though for them the year began not in January but in mid-March, when the crops were planted. During a massive 12-day religious festival known as Akitu, the Babylonians crowned a new king or reaffirmed their loyalty to the reigning king. They also made promises to the gods to pay their debts and return any objects they had borrowed. These promises could be considered the forerunners of our New Year\u2019s resolutions. If the Babylonians kept to their word, their (pagan) gods would bestow favour on them for the coming year. If not, they would fall out of the gods\u2019 favour \u2014 a place no one wanted to be!<\/p>\n

Civilizations around the world have been celebrating the start of each new year for at least four millennia. These days, most festivities begin in mid December<\/span> to the 31st (New Year\u2019s Eve), (the last day of the Gregorian calendar), and continue into the early hours of January 1 (New Year\u2019s Day). Common traditions include:\u00a0 eating special festive foods, making resolutions for the new year, watching fireworks displays and attending CHRISTMAS PARTIES<\/span><\/strong>. See below:<\/p>\n
